چکیده

A combination of static and oscillating magnetic fields can be used to ‘dress’ atoms with radiofrequency (RF), or microwave, radiation. The spatial variation of these fields can be used to create an enormous variety of traps for ultra-cold atoms and quantum gases. This article reviews the type and character of these adiabatic traps and the applications which include atom interferometry and the study of low-dimensional quantum systems. We introduce the main concepts of magnetic traps leading to adiabatic dressed traps. The concept of adiabaticity is discussed in the context of the Landau–Zener model. The first bubble trap experiment is reviewed together with the method used for loading it. Experiments based on atom chips show the production of double wells and ring traps. Dressed atom traps can be evaporatively cooled with an additional RF field, and a weak RF field can be used to probe the spectroscopy of the adiabatic potentials. Several approaches to ring traps formed from adiabatic potentials are discussed, including those based on atom chips, time-averaged adiabatic potentials and induction methods. Several proposals for adiabatic lattices with dressed atoms are also reviewed.

The spatial control of atoms, beyond their trapping in stationary potentials, has been continuously gaining importance in investigations of ultracold gases and in the application of atomic ensembles and single atoms for cavity QED and quantum information studies. Recent progress includes the trapping and control of single atoms in dynamic potentials [1, 2], the sub-micron positioning of individ...

Two-dimensional atom trapping in field-induced adiabatic potentials.

We show how to create a novel two-dimensional trap for ultracold atoms from a conventional magnetic trap. We achieve this by utilizing rf-induced adiabatic potentials to enhance the trapping potential in one direction. We demonstrate the loading process and discuss the experimental conditions under which it might be possible to prepare a 2D Bose condensate. A scheme for the preparation of coher...

Implementation of Single-Qutrit Quantum Gates via Tripod Adiabatic Passage

We proposed and analyzed implementation of the single-qutrit quantum gates based on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) between magnetic sublevels in atoms coupled by pulsed laser fields. This technique requires only the control of the relative phase of the driving fields but do not involve any dynamical or geometrical phases, which make it independent of the other interaction details: ...

Atom trapping and two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in field-induced adiabatic potentials

We discuss a method to create two-dimensional ~2D! traps as well as atomic shell, or bubble, states for a Bose-Einstein condensate initially prepared in a conventional magnetic trap. The scheme relies on the use of time-dependent, radio-frequency-induced adiabatic potentials. These are shown to form a versatile and robust tool to generate interesting trapping potentials. Our shell states take t...

Ultra - long - range states in excited 3 He 2

Long-range potentials have been calculated for He2 molecules dissociating to He 2 S + He 2 P, including the retarded dipole and the van der Waals interactions. Ultra-long-range wells with depths of up to about 2.4 GHz have been found in many of the adiabatic body-fixed potentials and rovibrational levels have been calculated for some of these wells, which have been found to support up to 4 rota...
